Highway 11 through Muskoka is a divided highway with limited shoulders in places, long gaps between exits and heavy weekend traffic between Severn Bridge and Huntsville. A vehicle stopped there needs to be cleared quickly, and the tow has to be planned around which side of the highway you're on and the nearest safe turnaround.
Off the highway it's a different problem. Muskoka Road 118 between Bracebridge and Port Carling, Muskoka Road 169 through Bala and the township roads out to the lakes are narrow, winding and often unlit. When you call, the more specific your location — fire number, nearest intersection, marina or landmark, or a shared map pin — the faster a truck reaches you.
Flatbed vs. wheel-lift: which truck gets sent
A wheel-lift truck lifts one axle and is fine for most front-wheel-drive cars going a short distance. A flatbed carries the whole vehicle with nothing turning, which is what you want for all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive locked in, lowered or damaged vehicles, EVs, and anything going a long way. Telling the dispatcher the year, make, model and drivetrain when you call means the correct truck arrives the first time.
Collision vehicles are handled after police or emergency services release the scene. Recovery from a ditch, a snowbank or a soft cottage driveway is a winching job first and a tow second, and may take longer than a straight pickup from a parking lot.
What to have ready when you call
- Your exact location — highway and direction, nearest exit, intersection or fire number.
- Vehicle year, make, model and whether it's AWD, 4x4, lowered or electric.
- What's wrong — won't start, won't shift, flat, off the road, collision.
- Where the vehicle is going: a specific garage, dealership, body shop or home address.
- Whether people or pets need a ride, and how many.
If the vehicle is drivable but unsafe, say so — sometimes roadside assistance solves it on the spot and no tow is needed. See Muskoka roadside assistance.
